Red, White & Royal Blue was one of my fav books for 2019, and after re-reading it last week I've decided it's my no. 1 for 2020 ❤️♡💙
Exquisitely written, it is tender and smart and sexy and, in some parts, freakin' hilarious. Firstly, Casey's dedication is "for the weirdos and the dreamers", and her pop-culture references are superb.
Secondly, let's talk world setting. Y'all, our hero Alex's mother is a Democrat female president and she is EVERYTHING a president should be. I would happily move to the US of A if she were running the country. She is savvy, empathetic, driven and, above all, a mother.
The friendship between Alex, his sister June and their best friend Nora is god damn delightful. Witty and funny and heartwarming. The dialogue is KILLER. Casey's secondary characters are thoughtfully written and fully-formed. They add so much to the story without detracting from Alex and Henry's relationship.
And oh. Their relationship. Sweet and real and steamy. “Horrible Revolting Heir,” Alex writes in an email to Henry. “It’s recently come to my attention you’re not quite as boring as I thought.” Nope, not boring at all.
